- Summary
- In 1963 Richard Hofstadter published his landmark book Anti-intellectualism in American Life. It explored a persistent and peculiar American trait: the frequent expression of disdain for education and knowledge. Today, as Matt K. Lewis argues in Too Dumb to Fail, America's inclination toward simplicity and stupidity is stronger than ever, and its greatest victim is the Republican Party. (Look no further than the events of the 2016 Republican Primary.) A columnist and frequent TV commentator, Lewis is on a mission to restore conservatism to its glorious Reagan-era peak. He eviscerates the phenomenon of candidates with a "no experience required" mentality and Tea Party "patriots" who possess bluster but few core beliefs. As Republicans double down on their base--Southern, older, rural, and evangelical white Americans--and fail to appeal to more diverse constituencies, they risk becoming a permanent minority. To reinvigorate conservatism, Lewis argues, conservatives must rediscover the movement's intellectual roots, from Aristotle to Edmund Burke to William F. Buckley Jr. He traces a political history in America, from the Lincoln-Douglas debates to Ronald Reagan's famous October 1964 Goldwater campaign speech, highlighting occasions where political leaders embraced nuance and complexity, and in the process changed the course of the nation. Lewis has an urgent message for fellow conservatives: Embrace wisdom, humility, experience, and prudence--the "first principles" of conservatism. Or face extinction
